Thursday 18th April 2024 – Embalse de Alcollarin

We had a slow start to our birding day two with a short walk around la Finca Flores Amarillas.

One of those lark’s again (crested or Thekla’s) at the beginning of our walk

A cheery chaffinch

This must be an illustration of one of Dominic’s anecdotes about dung beetles

A vociferous Sardinian warbler

So many new plants to admire – possibly Mediterranean Lineseed?

We then set off for the main aspect of our birding day to the area aound the reservoir at Alcollarin.

Great crested grebe

Glossy ibis

Gull-billed terns

Male marsh harrier

Over flying Egyptian geese

A woodchat shrike at our picnic spot

… and what a picnic!

These tongue orchid’s were very popular with the group

Even mallards were not scoffed at

I particularly enjoyed walking along the lanes – bird and nature watching

Clouded orange butterfly

Spoonbill in focus

Great white egret, black-winged stilts and an admiring white wagtail

Little egret keeping an eye out

The woodchat shrike gets my vote for bird of the day

… but the gull-billed tern came a close second as it was a “lifer” for me

Another very good day’s birding. The weather was sunny and warm but not as hot as on the steppes the day before.
