Sunday 21st April 2024 – Belén plain

On our fifth birding day we drove north again for just over an hour to visit the Belén plain in search of sand grouse and bustards. Again we were thwarted. A very kind landowner (cum student vet) did invite us on to his land deep in the countryside in search of the holy grail of Extrmadura. He even transported us in his 4×4 to save the suspension of the hire car. Still no luck (but we did have good views of his cattle).

About the best photo of our morning trip

We managed to experience the magnificent meadows up close

A corn bunting taken into the sun

The setting for our morning coffee was probably more scenic than our lunch stop. However, we did have a flyover of vultures stacked up like planes coming into Heathrow whilst having our lunch at Torrecillas del Tiesa.

It was a sunny day with light winds. However, when we returned to the Finca de Flores Amarillas and walked around the nearby countryside it was really quite warm.

A part of the holiday we particularly enjoyed was wandering along the lanes around la Finca de Flores Amarillas

The best of the birds I managed to photograph, although I did have a views of crested larks and hoopoe:

Griffon vulture

Ravens
